Since everyone else these days are putting in their 2 cents about the authenticity of challenge coins, I thought I’d share my 2 cents. I’ve been selling challenge coins for over 6 years now and I’m one of the very few originals left, so I believe what I have to say is legitimate.

First of all, challenge coins are not “authentic” and priceless unless the person reaches in his pocket and hands you one. Only US money is authentic and legally tendered. Now, how do these people get these coins? Does Obama run down to the local coin shop with a rough draft of “his” perfect coin and say make this for me? No. One of his associates designs it, gets the approval from him, and he takes it and has it made. Now, just where is it made? 75% are made in Korea, 15% in China, and 10% here in the US. So, how does a president’s coin get into the hands of a seller? Surely, he walks up to them and says “hey, can I have one of your coins so I can sell it on Ebay for $699.00”? Get real folks, it doesn’t happen like that. If it makes you feel good that you bought a coin off Ebay for $699.00, then go for it. If it makes a seller feel good because he sold you a “real” coin for $699.00 and he can sleep good at night, then oh well. The truth is that coins get produced, reproduced, sold in quantities to collectors and many other ways to get out there on the market. Now, as for me, sometimes coins are hard to get and so my prices are higher on some, depending on what I paid for it and how many I have. They did not come out of my personal collection, I would not part with those. They did not come from the hands of the original authentic owner. If I did not make a profit on my coins, why would I be in the business, for the fun of it? No. I have to consider Ebay fees, Paypal fees, shipping, packaging, printer ink, paper, electricity, gas, cost of the item, virus software, and the list could go on and on, but I believe you get the point. So when it is said and done, I still have to make a profit and at the same time provide customer satisfaction with a nice “real” coin that does not cost you $399, $499, or $699 like some gougers do on Ebay. I use the term “real”, because if you are holding it in your hand, it is as real as it’s ever going to be. It does not matter if it comes out of Obama or his Mama’s pocket, if he did not give it to you personally, then it’s not “authentic”.

Challenge Coins are becoming a huge collectable item these days. The history goes way back and you’ll hear of different stories of the first one being made from WW2 to Vietnam and even the British. I don’t know which story is true. What I do know is that soldiers love these and are awarded them when special deeds are done that are more deserving than just a pat on the back but less deserving of an achievement award. These coins will come from Generals, Colonels, Command Sergeant Majors or just about anyone in the chain of command. Almost all units in the military have designed their own unique coins. They make great keepsakes and wonderful conversational pieces.
